Copy trading is a system that automatically replicates another trader's positions into your own account in real time — when the trader you're following (the "master" or "signal" account) opens or closes a trade, the same trade is automatically opened or closed in your ("follower") account, typically scaled to match your own account size rather than copying the exact position size used in the master account.
The master account belongs to the trader whose strategy is being copied, and is typically the account whose historical performance, track record, and risk statistics followers review before deciding to copy it. The follower account is the account receiving the copied trades — its actual profit or loss depends both on the master trader's performance and on the follower's own risk settings layered on top of the copied trades.
Risk settings are the critical variable that gives a follower some control over their own outcome, even though they aren't personally choosing individual trades. Most copy trading platforms let a follower set a maximum position size or maximum risk percentage per copied trade, a maximum number of simultaneously open copied positions, and sometimes an overall stop-loss for the copying relationship itself, which automatically stops copying if losses reach a defined threshold — these settings don't change what trades get copied, but they do change how much of the master's actual results the follower's account experiences.
Copy trading doesn't remove the need for genuine due diligence — a master account's past performance, however strong, doesn't guarantee future results, and reviewing a track record for consistency, realistic drawdowns, and a sufficiently long history (rather than a short, lucky streak) matters just as much here as evaluating any other trading strategy before committing capital to it.
