A PAMM (Percentage Allocation Management Module) account is a structure that pools capital from multiple investors into a single trading account managed by one trader or money manager. Profits and losses are distributed among investors proportionally to how much of the total pool each contributed, based on a percentage allocation — if you contributed 10% of the pooled capital, you receive 10% of the trading results, whether positive or negative.
A MAM (Multi-Account Manager) account works similarly in that one manager trades on behalf of multiple investors, but structurally each investor typically retains a more distinctly separate underlying account rather than funds being pooled into one single combined account as with PAMM. This can allow more individual flexibility — different investors under the same manager might use different leverage or risk settings — while still having their trades mirrored from the same manager's decisions.
Both structures exist to let investors access a professional trader's strategy and decision-making without personally executing trades themselves, similar in spirit to copy trading but generally involving a more formal, direct money-management relationship, often used for larger account sizes and sometimes involving a performance fee paid to the manager based on profits generated.
Evaluating a MAM or PAMM manager calls for the same due diligence as evaluating any trader whose decisions will affect your capital: a sufficiently long and verifiable track record, realistic historical drawdowns rather than suspiciously smooth returns, a clear understanding of the manager's fee structure, and confirmation that the account and broker arrangement is legitimate and regulated — since, as with copy trading, past performance is never a guarantee of how the same manager will perform with your capital going forward.
