Scalping is the shortest-term trading style, holding positions for seconds to minutes, aiming to capture very small price movements repeatedly throughout a session. It requires intense focus, fast execution, and typically works best on highly liquid instruments with tight spreads, since transaction costs eat into small, frequent gains more than they do into larger, less frequent ones. Scalping demands significant time actively watching the market and is generally the most demanding style in terms of attention and speed of decision-making.
Day trading holds positions for minutes to hours, but always closes them before the trading day ends, avoiding the risk of holding a position overnight when markets are closed and unexpected news could cause a large gap in price. Day trading still requires substantial time watching markets during the trading session, but somewhat less relentless speed than scalping.
Swing trading holds positions for days to a few weeks, aiming to capture a larger portion of a medium-term price move rather than many small ones. This style requires less constant screen time than scalping or day trading, since positions don't need to be monitored minute by minute, but it does require tolerating overnight and weekend exposure, including the risk of a price gap when markets reopen.
Position trading holds trades for weeks to months or longer, closer in spirit to investing, and typically relies more heavily on fundamental analysis and broader trend and economic-cycle context than on short-term chart patterns. Choosing among these styles isn't purely a matter of preference — it should reflect how much time you can realistically dedicate to watching markets, your tolerance for overnight risk, and your personality: some traders thrive on fast, frequent decisions, while others do much better with the slower pace and larger-picture thinking that swing and position trading allow.
