MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is one of the most widely used trading platforms in forex and CFD trading, offered by the large majority of retail brokers. Its lasting popularity comes down to a few things: it's free to use once you have a broker account, it's relatively lightweight and fast, and it supports automated trading through Expert Advisors (EAs), which is a major reason it became the default platform for algorithmic and copy-trading strategies in retail forex.
The main window is organized into a few core areas: the Market Watch panel lists available instruments and their live prices; the chart window (or windows, since multiple can be open at once) shows price action with drawing tools and indicators similar to other charting platforms; the Navigator panel gives access to installed indicators, EAs, and scripts; and the Terminal panel at the bottom shows open trades, account history, and account balance information.
Placing a trade in MT4 typically means right-clicking an instrument in Market Watch (or double-clicking it) to open an order ticket, where you set the trade direction, position size (in lots), and optionally a stop-loss and take-profit before submitting. Existing positions and pending orders are managed from the Terminal panel's Trade tab, where trades can be modified or closed directly.
MT4's Expert Advisor system is one of its most distinctive features — EAs are written in MQL4 (MetaTrader's own programming language) and can be attached to any chart to automate a trading strategy's entries, exits, and risk management entirely, which is covered in more depth in the lesson on algorithmic trading. For a beginner, spending time simply getting comfortable placing and managing manual trades on a demo account is a sensible first step before exploring EAs, indicators, or more advanced platform features.
